Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring (Le Sacre du printemps) begins with a solitary line; in this opening canvas it becomes a filament of light skimming the thawing ground. Begun in May 2014, as winter finally loosened its hold, this work carries the pressure of first crocuses pushing up through frost—color insisting on breath. Rhythm gathers in quiet pulses; shards lean into arcs; circles tighten, then open. The image holds the hinge between seasons: anticipation, ache, and the will to rise.
It makes renewal visible, not as ornament but as decision. It translates Stravinsky’s music into contemporary abstract form and traces the earth’s cycle of destruction, renewal, and rebirth, opening the ritual.
For a concise musical guide to the opening, see the LA Phil program note.
