Afternoon gives way to evening. What starts as quick, ground-level bustle eases toward a cooler, watchful night: playful steps soften, distances lengthen, and a far call seems to arrive from beyond the clearing. In Mahler it’s the offstage posthorn—distance heard inside the dance. Paula renders that shift as felt space: lively motion opens into contemplation. Bright brass then cut through with a parade-hard edge, like the outer world intruding, before the creatures settle back into their murmur. Near and far, whimsy and reverie—held together in one forest.

Premiere (complete symphony): 9 June 1902 — Krefeld; conducted by the composer.
