On April 12, 2026 at 3:00 p.m., Ada Slaight Hall at Daniels Spectrum hosts the Toronto premiere of Pictures at an Exhibition—a one-time, co-production by artist Paula Arciniega and the Hannaford Street Silver Band. Fifteen large-scale canvases, each in dialogue with Modest Mussorgsky’s 1874 suite, will be installed throughout the hall; audiences may promenade among the works before and after the concert. Onstage, the 30-piece HSSB performs Pictures conducted by James Sommerville, with lighting shaping a hybrid gallery-concert experience. The programme opens with George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue featuring guest pianist Jamie Parker; a VIP postlude offers a solo performance of Maurice Ravel’s Le Tombeau de Couperin and a new companion painting by Arciniega. Art and brass meet in a gallery in motion - one performance only.

Based in Toronto, Paula Arciniega creates at the crossroads of sound and image. Trained as a classical vocalist with a Master’s degree from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, she has built a dual career where painting and performance continually inform one another.
For Paula, music is not only heard — it is seen. Classical compositions inspire her to translate harmonies, rhythms, and textures into vibrant fields of color and abstract form. At times, her natural synesthesia adds another layer, allowing sound to spark visual impressions that enrich her process. The result is a body of work where bold brushstrokes echo melodic lines, shifting hues mirror emotional turns, and painting itself becomes a kind of listening.
Paula also paints realist landscapes — a welcome shift in her creative process that grounds her practice in close observation and the quiet poetics of place. Alongside these, she has developed collections that include musically inspired series, abstract works, and explorations of the human figure.

Each painting is, for Paula, an act of faith — where ideas held in the mind are both chased and revealed through the tactile flow of the brush. This putting down of color, this dance of intention and subconsciousness, becomes an act of emergence: part discipline, part discovery. The heavens cannot be known all the time; art and music arrive as glimpses that leave us more alive, more truthful, and more hopeful about what comes next.
