13. The Catacombs ~ With the Dead in the language of the Dead

66" x 111" - 167.64 x 281.94
Acrylic & Oil on Canvas
Inspired by:
Mussorgsky's  "Pictures at an Exhibition"

In this drawing Hartmann portrayed himself contemplating the interior of the Paris catacombs by the light of a lantern.

The second part of the movement is an Andante in b minor that Moussorgsky titled "Con mortuis in lingua mortuo." This translates as “with the dead in the language of the dead.”

Above the original manuscript Moussorgsky wrote: “L’esprit createur de hartmann defunt me mene vers les cranes et les apostrophe- les cranes s’allumnet doucement a L’interieur.”
